Don’t go looking for results of Saturday’s Pikes Peak Road Runners Winter Series opener at Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

Unless you were one of the hundreds who required the use of metal spikes for traction on the ice- and snow-covered trails, the races will go down in history as unofficial tuneups for the three remaining events in the series.

“We definitely didn’t want to cancel it,” race co-director John Gardner said. “It warmed up quite a bit, so conditions weren’t nearly as bad as when we marked the course (Friday). We thought that perhaps if we didn’t time it, then you wouldn’t have people really pushing, and that would help in terms of minimizing or eliminating any injuries. All in all, we were happy with how things turned out.”

No one seemed disappointed with no finish line and didn’t mind a little mud to show for their efforts.

“It’s always a good time,” said Alex Nichols, who reached the unofficial finish line first among those who started the seven-mile race.

“With no real timing, it was a good first race of the year. It was a fun time.”

Unofficially, Simon Gutierrez and Peter Maksimow hit the finish line in a virtual tie to end the 3.3-mile race.

“It would take a lot more than this to cancel a race around here,” Gutierrez said. “A lot of it is being careful and knowing what your limits are. It pays to be careful.”

By the time runners made their trek toward the mud puddle of a finish line that led into the parking lot, much of the ice and snow had melted on a sunny Saturday morning.

That made things interesting for runners who might not have decided to bring out the metal spikes, such as Air Force freshman cadet Shanna Chen.

“I didn’t really prepare. My only plan was to finish,” said Chen, whose mud-covered lower right leg didn’t cause an injury. “I just ran it, and on my way back down, I slipped a little bit.”

Chen, a member of the academy’s marathon team, certainly has endured much tougher conditions than a trail covered in ice and snow.

“Basic training was a little more difficult,” said Chen of Chandler, Ariz. “I just didn’t expect this to be so muddy.”

Even without a time to go by, Chen seemed encouraged by the run. It’s all part of the master plan for her long-term goal of earning a berth in the Boston Marathon in 2016.

“From race to race, it shows the progress you can make,” Chen said.

“Hopefully, I can continue to do better. My team is the reason why I’ve gotten this far, and three or four of them have already qualified for Boston. I’m blessed to have that encouragement and support around me.”
