A Colorado Springs man faces criminal charges after a car wreck killed a Divide man Sunday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Preston Wells, 20, was cited for careless driving causing death, said Sgt. Scott Hophan. Jonathon Schrein, 35, of Divide, died of the injuries he suffered when his 1994 Saturn coupe was struck by Wells’s 2012 Nissan Titan about 12:50 p.m., near the intersection of Teller County Road 5 and Teller County Road 51, north of U.S. 24, state patrol said.

Wells was initially ticketed with careless driving causing injury, Hophan said, but Schrein died shortly after arriving at Penrose Main Hospital.

“The victim died less than 15 minutes after he was rushed to the hospital, but we didn’t think it was necessary to go back to Mr. Wells’s home, arrest him and take him to jail. He is aware of the charge,” Hophan said.

According to state patrol reports, Wells failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Teller County roads 5 and 51, just as Schrein’s coupe made a left sweeping turn onto Teller County Road 51, and collided with him. Wells was not injured in the crash, state patrol said.
