Colorado Springs-based Compassion International ranks 22nd in the 2014 Philanthropy 400, The Chronicle of Philanthrophy’s list of America’s biggest charities ranked by the most money raised from private sources in the 2013 fiscal year.

Six of nine Colorado companies that made the list are based in Colorado Springs, including Compassion International, which raised $656,893,101, according to the list’s website. The rankings were based on cash and product donations as well as stock, land and other gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations in the U.S., according to a statement from The Chronicle of Philanthropy released Sunday.

Among the key takeaways of this year’s Philanthropy 400 were that big charities are raising money at a much faster rate than their peers, fueled by wealthy donors that have benefited from gains in the stock market, the statement read. The wealthier groups showed a 10 percent rise in giving, while smaller charities and nonprofits experienced only a 3 percent increase.

The list was designed to show which groups appealed to donors most successfully, so government payments were not included, the statement read.
