The morning after a shooting that left a man dead in a southeast Colorado Springs apartment complex everything was quiet and calm, which is how one resident described the Park Hill neighborhood.

Mark Wolfe, 51, hunched over his car’s open hood and tinkered with a few wires then recalled the commotion when he heard gunshots from a nearby apartment about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday.

“My son and I heard at least four gunshots; I think they came from the back porch,” Wolfe told The Gazette on Wednesday. “I called police right away and came outside, then there were all these people running away from the apartment, yelling, ‘He went that way!’ ”

The victim, whose identity has not been released by police pending next-of-kin notification, was a man in his early 30s who had moved to the apartment complex around July, Wolfe said.

Wolfe moved to the apartments on the 900 block of Acapulco Court, off South Academy and East Fountain boulevards, in March.

“We like living here, it’s usually calm and there’s lots of kids playing outside; we even have a neighborhood watch,” he said, shaking his head. “I don’t understand this kind of violence.”

Wolfe said that he and his family had always felt safe, until the victim moved just a few doors away.

“There was just too much activity going on in that apartment,” Wolfe said. “People coming and going at all hours of the day and night.”

The victim died from apparent gunshot wounds after being taken to an area hospital, police said.

No arrests had been made by Wednesday, and police did not provide a description of the shooter. Anyone with information can call police at 444-7000.
