A SWAT standoff in east Colorado Springs ended peacefully on Sunday after a man armed with a shotgun barricaded himself in a friend’s house and threatened to kill himself, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

William Freemire, 37, was taken into custody about 3 p.m. on a felony domestic violence warrant from Colorado Springs police and several pending charges, including possession of a weapon by a previously convicted felon, said Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Greg White.

Freemire allegedly forced his way into a friend’s house on the 500 block of Ford Street, off East Platte Avenue, about 10:45 a.m. and threatened to commit suicide, White said.

Freemire’s friends left the house and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, prompting the dispatch of the SWAT team and explosives ordnance disposal unit, White explained.

“We surrounded the house, our negotiators talked him down and he came out after a little bit,” White said. “There were no shots fired, no injuries; it ended peacefully, just like we like it.”

Freemire was taken into custody and held at the El Paso County jail pending filing of charges, White said.
