The Police Operations Center closed for about a half-hour Monday when a suspicious device was brought to the building on the 700 block of South Nevada Avenue, according to Colorado Springs police.

Rio Grande Street was closed between Nevada Avenue and South Weber Street as the bomb squad unit identified the device as a military smoke bomb and determined it was not a danger to the public, police spokeswoman Lt. Catherine Buckley said.

“If anyone is unsure of what an item is, please leave it where you found it and call police to come to your location,” Buckley said. “Walking into a police station with an unidentified device is hazardous for both the public and police personnel.”

The person that brought the smoke device to the police operations center will not be ticketed or cited, Buckley said.

All roads were reopened by 12:30 p.m., Buckley said.
