A woman wanted on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder of an off-duty peace officer was found dead after an overnight manhunt, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Christina Furber, 26, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot before 7 a.m., sheriff’s spokesman Capt. David Lucero said. The owner of a residence on the 1000 block of Shenandoah Drive reportedly discovered Furber’s body in a vehicle inside his garage, Lucero said.

Furber allegedly shot at a Pueblo police officer Monday night when a struggle broke out between the two in a Pueblo West residence about a block from where her body was found, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Furber was considered “armed and dangerous,” and Sheriff Kirk M. Taylor “committed all officer resources and will make every effort to take Christina into custody as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement read.

An off-duty police officer returned home Monday about 10 p.m. when she tried to stop a driver who appeared to be driving erratically, according to the sheriff’s office.

The officer was in uniform and driving her personal vehicle, the statement read.

The officer followed the driver, later identified as Furber, to a residence on the 1000 block of Wild Wind Place, off Highway 50 and north of Pueblo West High School.

As the officer tried to identify Furber, a struggle ensued between the two in the residence and Furber allegedly pulled a large caliber revolver from her purse and fired at the officer, the sheriff’s office said.

The officer returned fire and Furber fled to the south of the residence, into an open field. The officer was not shot and Furber did not appear to be injured.

A reverse 911 call alerted residents in the area to remain indoors as sheriff’s deputies, K-9 and SWAT teams swarmed an area of about one-square mile, the sheriff’s office said.

Pueblo West High School, Skyview Middle School and Cedar Ridge Elementary School, all in the area where deputies searched for Furber, were on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning.
