Highlights from Tuesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

BOYS’ GOLF

Panther Invitational

At Shining Invitational: With his fourth consecutive league score of 74, Mesa Ridge’s Braden Bentley wrapped up the 4A Colorado Springs Metro League title on Tuesday.

Austin Matheney shot a 73 to edge Bentley for the tournament victory and help lead Pine Creek (227) to the team victory, but 

Rounding out the top five was Pueblo West (241), Mesa Ridge (241), Palmer Ridge (243) and Palmer (243).

Widefield’s Nate Starke was third with a 75, just as he was third in the 4A CSML race, three strokes behind Mesa Ridge’s Logan Gorman.

The Grizzlies won the league team title comfortably, beating second-place Canon City by 89 strokes.

 

BOYS’ SOCCER

Cheyenne Mountain 1, Valor Christian 0

At Valor Christian: Cheyenne Mountain (3-1) coach Tomas Martinez understands his team needs to continue to strive to get better, but he will take a 1-0 victory over Valor Christian (2-3) regardless.

The Indians are continuing to adjust with new players taking on significant roles this season, and on Tuesday night it was sophomore Luke White coming through with the eventual game-winner.

White scored his first-half tally after the forward received a good ball from Ben Weston off an Indians’ combination up the field.

“Luke has been working a lot harder this year and knows the game a lot better,” Martinez said. “He has been great.”

Cheyenne Mountain has won three consecutive games in a row and has outscored its opponents 5-0.

“We are coming along this year,” Martinez said. “We are not where we want to be yet, but we will be there come the playoffs.”

Air Academy 2, Pine Creek 1

At Air Academy: The Kadets (6-0) remained undefeated with one of their more impressive wins of the 2014 season by downing rival Pine Creek (2-2-1).

Air Academy juniors Henry Yocum and Mark Beatty helped the Kadets jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and Matt Pipan remained strong in goal to hold off the Eagles’ second-half comeback attempt.

Pine Creek’s Aaron Haefner had a goal and Logan Thomas made seven saves in goal.

Bruce Randolph 2, Sierra 0

At Sierra: Jose Santos scored twice and Muhammed Ahmed assisted on both of Santos’ tallies to lead Bruce Randolph (2-0-1) past Sierra (1-3) on the road in nonconference action.

Sierra has been shut out in two of its four games.

Woodland Park 11, Evangelical Christian Academy 1

At Woodland Park: The Panthers (1-2) earned their first victory of the season as Kristian Hooker (five) and Cody Stroup (four) combined to score nine of Woodland Park’s 11 goals.

Dalton LeFever and Jesse Obernesser also scored for the Panthers.

Woodland Park outshot ECA 30-3.

Doherty 3, Arapahoe 0

At Arapahoe: Doherty (4-1) earned a nonconference road victory over Arapahoe (3-3).

Vanguard 5, Rye 2

At Rye: Five players found the back of the net to lead Vanguard (1-0) to a season-opening win over Rye (4-3) on the road.

Senior Tyler Williams and freshman Christopher Sudduth each had a goal and an assist for the Coursers.

No stats were reported for Rye.

SOFTBALL

Rampart 4, Liberty 2

At Rampart: Amanda Londo led the Rams (8-4, 6-0 5A Metro) to a league win with two RBIs, a home run and a double against Liberty (4-8, 3-3).

Londo, who leads Rampart with six doubles this season, was joined by fellow Rampart senior Kaesha Harper with two hits, while junior Alyssa McDowell was able to hold Liberty to two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and one walk in seven innings. McDowell improves to 8-4 and has a 2.89 ERA.

No stats were reported for Liberty.

Woodland Park 22, Sierra 0 (3 innings)

At Sierra: Woodland Park (10-2, 3-0) became the first 4A Metro League team to reach 10 wins by scoring 20-plus runs for the third time this season in a conference win over the Stallions (1-7, 0-2).

Lexie Comer (1 for 2) and Hayley Corbiere (2 for 2) highlighted Woodland Park’s 16-hit onslaught with three RBIs each. Comer is hitting .562 with 24 RBIs and 10 extra-base hits.

Comer (9-2) also was credited with the victory after striking out five in two innings of scoreless ball. She teamed with Jayllan Krause to no-hit Sierra.

No stats were reported for Sierra.

St. Mary’s 18, Manual 1 (4 innings)

At St. Mary’s: The Pirates (3-7) used a season-high 18 runs to end a six-game losing streak in nonconference play.

Ashley Vetack (five RBIs) was one of four players with two or more RBIs and the senior also blasted her first home run of her varsity high school career.

Freshman starter McKenzie Boyer (3-6) held winless Manual (0-5) to one run on one hit and two walks to earn the win.

No stats were reported for Manual.

VOLLEYBALL

Lewis-Palmer def. Highlands Ranch 3-0

At Lewis-Palmer: The Rangers (7-0) kept their perfect record intact thanks to an overall team victory at home against Highlands Ranch (4-4).

Alexa Smith added to her Lewis-Palmer-leading kill total by firing 12 kills in the team’s 25-10, 25-15, 25-17 victory. The 6-foot-1 senior has 81 kills this season.

Mariah Evans had a team-high 23 assists.

No stats were reported for Highlands Ranch.

St. Mary’s def. Dolores Huerta 3-0

At Dolores Huerta: Sophomore Brighid Heaney helped St. Mary’s (1-4, 1-0 3A Tri-Peaks) end a three-game losing skid with eight kills on the road in its league opener against the Scorpions (2-4, 0-1).

Tara Sweeney, another sophomore, helped pace the offense with 17 assists. She has posted 17 or more assists in all five of St. Mary’s games.

St. Mary’s won in three sets (25-8, 25-8, 25-18).

No stats were reported for Dolores Huerta.

Mesa Ridge def. Harrison 3-0

At Mesa Ridge: Jordan Hoffman propelled the Grizzlies (3-1, 1-0 4A Metro) to the team’s first league victory of 2014.

Hoffman finished with 16 assists and seven kills.

Mesa Ridge was victorious via 25-9, 25-9 and 28-26 scores.

No stats were reported for Harrison (1-8).

Manitou Springs def. James Irwin 3-0

At James Irwin: Manitou Springs (7-1, 2-0 3A Tri Peaks) took care of James Irwin 25-9, 25-9 and 25-8 courtesy of Katie McKiel’s seventh double-digit kills performance of the year.

McKiel registered a team-high 18 kills and fellow junior Angala Jensen posted 28 assists.

Jensen is averaging 10.5 assists per set this season.

No stats were reported for James Irwin.

Woodland Park def. Falcon 3-2

At Falcon: Woodland Park (5-3) defeated Falcon in a thrilling five-set match on the road.

It was a tough-luck loss for the Falcons after receiving a season-best 23 kills from Megan Orth, who passed the 300 career kill mark on Tuesday.

Woodland Park earned the win via 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-13 scores.

No stats were reported for Woodland Park.

Kiowa def. Colorado Springs School 3-1

At Colorado Springs School: The Kodiaks (4-3, 0-1 2A District 8) did not get the anticipated start they desired for the beginning of 2A District 8 conference play and fell to Kiowa (4-3, 1-1) in four sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23).

Senior Kristin Moore had 47 digs as CSS was without setter Maddee Morley.

No stats were reported for Kiowa.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Pueblo Central 6, Fountain Valley 1

At Pueblo Central: Fountain Valley struggled on the road as No. 4 doubles teammates Billy Gong and Wilson Miles-Ochoa were the only Danes able to find success against Pueblo Central.

Gong and Miles-Ochoa earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
