Without a word, members of the Palmer Ridge High School varsity soccer team each held up two fingers Thursday night before their first game since two classmates – one a teammate – were killed in a car crash.

The spectators at Don Breese Stadium did the same, in tribute to Ryan Pappas.

Pappas, 18, one of two Palmer Ridge seniors killed Monday, wore No. 2 on the soccer field and the baseball diamond, where he formed strong bonds with teammates.

“Baseball was a big part of our friendship,” senior Matt Hansen said. “Ryan Pappas was my best friend. I’m going to miss that kid so much.”

To honor Pappas, Hansen said, two former Palmer Ridge baseball players made a wooden No. 2 sign and hung it out on the school’s outfield fence.

“Ryan so loved all of his friends, and his very special baseball family, as well as his new soccer family. We are so touched by the love and support of friends and strangers alike,” read a statement released Thursday by the Pappas family. “Our prayer is that from this tragedy, good will come.”

Beau Begier, 17, also died in the crash.

The 2009 Mini Cooper they were traveling in was going about 80 mph early Monday when it went airborne three times, rolled down an embankment and crashed through a fence and into trees, according to a preliminary traffic report from the Colorado State Patrol.

The driver was traveling east on East Baptist Assembly Road near Hodgen and Roller Coaster roads in Black Forest about 1:10 a.m. Monday when he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the state patrol report.

That stretch of Baptist has a 40 mph speed limit.

Begier and Pappas died at the scene. A third passenger, Jack Mitchell Clark, 17, was injured. The driver, whose name has not been released, was treated for minor injuries and released to the Spring Creek Youth Services Center.

Three of the four teens were wearing seat belts, the report said. Begier was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car through the sunroof.

Clark, whose condition was upgraded Thursday to fair at Penrose Hospital, was the front-seat passenger, the report stated.

“We wanted to let the community know that Jack is doing well,” Ellen and Mitch Clark, Jack Mitchell Clark’s parents, said in a statement Thursday. “We thank God for Jack’s healing. … We are deeply touched by the kindness and support from friends, family and the Monument community.

“Our hearts break for the loss of Beau and Ryan. Our prayers are with Beau’s, Ryan’s and the driver’s families. We pray for peace and healing.”

The driver, an unnamed Parker teen, was ordered to remain in juvenile detention without bond, pending a hearing Friday afternoon when Magistrate Jeffrey Saufley will decide whether to charge him as a juvenile or an adult.

According to State Patrol investigators, the driver was under the influence of alcohol, and vehicular homicide is the primary violation in the crash report.
