Tuesday’s high school roundup: St. Mary’s softball holds off late TCA rally

Highlights from Tuesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

 

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 9, The Classical Academy 8

At Leon Young: St. Mary’s (2-1) held off a ferocious, seventh-inning rally by TCA (3-1) to earn a nonconference victory.

St. Mary’s freshman McKenzie Boyer recorded the final out of the game for her third consecutive complete game in as many starts after TCA scored four runs in the final inning.

Boyer improved to 2-1 after being charged with eight runs (two earned) on nine hits and four walks. She has a 3.56 ERA to go along with 17 strikeouts in 192/3 innings this season.

The Pirates appeared poised for an easy victory after scoring seven runs in the first inning. TCA starter Allie Patnaude (1-1) allowed nine runs (three earned) on seven hits and seven walks in four innings. The sophomore struck out five.

Tess Huber, another St. Mary’s freshman, led the way at the plate for the Pirates by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

TCA’s Madison Cooper finished with a game-high three hits as the Titans lost their first game this year.

Woodland Park 3, Evergreen 2

At Woodland Park: Lexie Comer turned in an effective pitching performance to help Woodland Park (2-2) get back to .500 with a nonconference victory over Evergreen (2-1).

The senior captain pitched seven full innings and limited the Cougars to two runs (one earned) on four hits, while showing excellent command with no walks.

Comer also helped herself at the plate by launching a solo home run and driving in another run via sacrifice.

After being hit around by Valor Christian for 10 runs (seven earned) in the season-opener, Comer (2-2) has responded by allowing just five runs in her past three appearances.

Rampart 7, Coronado 6

At Rampart: The Rams (3-1, 2-0 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) generated seven runs off only five hits to edge past Coronado (1-2, 0-2) in league play.

Amanda Londo did the major damage for Rampart with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the first inning, as the Rams opened a 3-1 lead. Rampart later scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 6-5 deficit.

Alyssa McDowell (3-1) earned the victory on the mound with five strikeouts in seven innings. The junior allowed six runs (two earned) on 11 hits and three walks.

No stats were reported for Coronado by deadline.

Pine Creek 12, Palmer 2 (5 innings)

At Pine Creek: The Eagles (3-0, 3-0 5A CSML) remained undefeated by scoring 10-plus runs for the third consecutive game in knocking off Palmer (1-2, 1-2) in conference action.

Seven different players recorded an RBI, while Brittany Carson and Camille Gardner came through with two each.

Bailey Meyer (2-0) earned her second win of 2014 with 12 strikeouts and the junior limited Palmer to two runs on three hits and two walks. It was Meyer’s second complete game of the season after blanking Liberty in the Eagles’ 10-0 win last week.

No stats were reported for Palmer by deadline.

Liberty 17, Doherty 2 (5 innings)

At Liberty: The Lancers (2-2, 2-1 5A CSML) erupted for a season-high 17 runs in its home opener to earn a league victory against Doherty (0-5, 0-3).

Laneia Lundquist and Kaitlyn Barlow highlighted Liberty’s offensive fire power with four RBIs and two hits apiece.

Mariah Grijalva (2-0) was just as dominant on the mound and held Doherty to two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks. The senior struck out four to raise her season total to 11.

Noelle Windesheim and Stephanie Price had RBI-singles for the Spartans.

Terri Forney (0-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering eight runs on two hits and six walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Pueblo West 17, Palmer Ridge 0

At Pueblo West: The Cyclones showed their excitement for the start of the new school year by erupting for 17 runs in a season-opening victory in nonconference action.

Pueblo East 15, Canon City 3

At Canon City: The Tigers (1-1) dropped their first game of the season after being thwarted by Pueblo East (1-2) in a nonconference game.

Six different players recorded an RBI for Canon City and the Tigers combined for seven extra-base hits.

Sophomores Kynlee Peaker and Lauren Renck had two RBIs each.

Junior Delaney Ramos (1-2) was the winning pitcher after containing Canon City to three runs on six hits and three walks.

No stats were reported for the Tigers as of deadline.

 

BOYS’ SOCCER

Pueblo Centennial 3, Lewis-Palmer 0

At Lewis-Palmer: Early-season offensive struggles continued for Lewis-Palmer (0-2), as the Rangers were shut out for the second time in as many games during Tuesday’s nonconference contest with Pueblo Centennial (2-0).

Jumanne Transou found the back of the net twice and Obed Meza-Cardenas scored once.

 

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Buena Vista def. Woodland Park 25-15, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18

At Woodland Park: The Panthers (0-1) dropped their season opener at home in four sets during nonconference action against Buena Vista (1-0).

Wilson Sierra had a team-high six kills for Woodland Park and Cruse Michelle posted 15 digs.

Mitchell def. Falcon 32-30, 25-17, 27-25

At Mitchell: The Marauders (1-0) swept Falcon in straight sets in their first game of the 2014 season.

Junior Megan Orth led the Falcon offense with 15 kills, while picking up 12 digs on the defensive side.

Classmate Jessica Janzer posted 20 assists.

No stats were reported for Mitchell as of deadline.

 

BOYS’ TENNIS

Liberty 7, Widefield 0

At Liberty: Liberty swept Widefield with victories courtesy of Sam Sommers, Karl Anderson, Jake Becker, Garrett Weiss and Trevan Champman, Brody Fleming and Luke Carpenter, Sean McHugh and Ryan Evans and Mathieu Gosselin and Austin Lewis.
