The 2014 Pikes Peak Regional Air Show ended early on Sunday due to inclement weather, according to air show officials.

More than 40 aircraft were scheduled to appear Saturday and Sunday at the Colorado Springs Airport.

World War II aircraft heroes such as the F4U Corsair, F7F Tigercat, B-25 Mitchell bomber and the P-51C Mustang fighter delighted audiences with acrobatics, flyovers and displays on Saturday, but thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds prompted an early end to Sunday’s show.

“These are very old aircraft, in many cases more than 65 years old, and the damage they could sustain from the weather would have been very costly,” said air show spokesman John Henry. “We really regretted it, we were all very saddened that we had to make that call.”

Aerial demonstrations were brought down about 1 p.m., about an hour early.

“In terms of the aerial demonstration of the show, we were able to get through more than half of it,” Henry said.
