Police on the west side of Colorado Springs were busy Sunday when two crashes sent several people to local hospitals and closed off streets for emergency personnel.

The first crash was reported about 1 p.m. from the intersection of 30th Street and Mesa Road, according to Colorado Springs police.

One man had to be extricated from a Corvette that collided head-on with a white Mercedes Benz, Sgt. Mark Devorss said.

The man and two other people involved in the crash were hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.

The Colorado State Patrol responded to the second crash about 4 p.m. that closed U.S. 24 at 31st Street for about an hour, Trooper Josh Lewis said.

A 2015 GMC SUV struck a 1987 Jeep SUV and the drivers of both vehicles were taken to a local hospital for precautionary evaluations. State patrol officials said no injuries were reported.

No drugs or alcohol were suspected as factors in the crash, but Lewis said the driver of the GMC was ticketed for reckeless driving and traffic violations.
