Five people were hospitalized, two with serious injuries, after a multi-vehicle crash shut down the intersection of East Pikes Peak Avenue and North Chelton Road on Thursday morning, Colorado Springs police said.

The driver of a white Mazda Protege and a passenger were seriously injured when the driver allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of North Chelton Road and East Pikes Peak Avenue about 7:40 a.m., said police Lt. Catherine Buckley.

The Mazda was struck by a red Dodge Dakota traveling eastbound on Pikes Peak Avenue. The Mazda continued through the intersection and collided with a blue Nissan Maxima that was northbound on Chelton Road, Buckley said.

The drivers of the Dodge and the Nissan, as well as another passenger from the Mazda, were taken to local hospitals for precautionary evaluations, Buckley said.

The driver of the Mazda, whose identity was not released by police, was cited for careless driving resulting in injury and traffic control signal violation, Buckley said.

Police do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be factors in the crash, but the cause remained under investigation.

One westbound lane of Pikes Peak Avenue was open by 9:30 a.m. without word on when the intersection would reopen completely.
