UPDATE: Power restored to 1,700 Colorado Springs Utilities customers

At least 1,700 people went without power Wednesday from southeast Colorado Springs over Highway 85/87 into Security, utilities officials confirmed.

The outage was initially reported about 12:30 p.m. and power was fully restored about 2 p.m., according to utilities officials.

There was no word from utilities work crews on the cause of the power failure, said spokesman Steve Berry, adding that recent thunderstorms over El Paso County may have contributed to the situation.

“With weather like this, sometimes there’s lightning, so it’s most likely an equipment failure,” Berry said.
