The man who was fatally shot Sunday night in a south-central Colorado Springs neighborhood has been identified as Michael Garcia, 31.

The Colorado Springs man was found near the rear garage entrance of a townhome on the 2000 block of St. Claire Park Alley, near U.S. 24 and Hancock Expressway, according to a police scanner. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office said the cause of death was a gunshot wound and ruled it a homicide.

Police were called about 11:15 p.m. Sunday when a neighbor reported hearing shots fired.

“RP (reporting party) says they heard two shots fired and can see a male lying in a pool of blood behind the location,” the police dispatcher said on the scanner.

“My roommate and I heard the shots and we went outside to see what was happening, then there were several cop cars and they put up yellow tape and blocked the area,” said Mike Harrington, 34, a year-long resident of a home a few hundred feet from the scene of the shooting.

“It’s usually quiet around here. People feel safe and kids play outside all the time,” Harrington said. “It’s scary to think if there was a motive, or if it was a random crime.”

No information was available on possible suspects.

Garcia’s killing was the 13th homicide in Colorado Springs this year; at this time last year, the city had recorded 19 homicides, police said.
