The Eightmile fire in eastern Fremont County was about 40 percent contained Monday evening, the U.S. Forest Service reported.

About 300 firefighters and support personnel battled the 528-acre blaze Monday.

Six Type I and II hand crews- trained to work in rough, steep and rugged terrain – were working the fire line, according to a statement released from the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team Monday.

The lightning-sparked wildfire near Phantom Canyon Road, about six miles northeast of Canon City, began burning June 23 on Bureau of Land Management property.

No structures have been threatened and no injuries reported, but 16 homes about a mile from the fire in the Red Rocks subdivision remained on pre-evacuation notification status, meaning residents should be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.

Businesses in the 8 Mile Hill area west of Canon City were not affected by the fire, and whitewater rafting tours on the Arkansas River were continuing, according to Fremont County officials.

Temperatures in the area peaked around 95 degrees while firefighters battled the blaze Monday. Tuesday is expected to be cooler, with highs in the upper 60s and 70s forecasted for the area. The National Weather Service also predicts a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Firefighters and others at the scene took a brief break Monday to mark the one-year anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire tragedy, in which 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots died on Yarnell Hill in Arizona. The Eightmile Fire personnel observed a moment of silence for the fallen firefighters.

Nearly eight miles of Phantom Canyon Road, off Fremont County Road 123, remained closed Monday.
