A 31-year-old Utah woman was missing after being tossed from a raft in the Arkansas River near Salida Saturday, according to a statement from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office released Sunday.

Amanda Taylor, of Vernal, Utah, was with six other people when their raft overturned as it went over a diversion dam about 10:30 p.m. and was pulled downstream by a fast-moving current, the sheriff’s office stated.

Chaffee County Search and Rescue crews combed about 30 miles of terrain downstream Sunday, Undersheriff John Spezze said.

“The search teams are returning to the starting site and will work their way south again, to make sure they didn’t miss anything,” Spezze said. “So far, they haven’t found anything or anyone.”

Taylor and six other rafters first entered the river at Fisherman’s Bridge south of Buena Vista intending to raft to the Salida boat ramp. Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office deputies found five people on the west shore of the Arkansas River near County Road 160 and a sixth man clinging to the overturned raft nearby.

The raft was recovered a half-mile north of Salida’s F Street Bridge and authorities suspended the search by 2 a.m. due to darkness, resuming by 7 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office said.

Five bodies have been recovered from the Arkansas River in southern Colorado in June and 14 drowning deaths have been reported statewide this year, according to the American Whitewater Affiliation.
