Fire, emergency crews at Garden of the Gods Park for ‘significant rescue’

Colorado Springs fire and emergency crews rescued a young climber Monday at the Garden of the Gods Park.

The teen fell about 40 feet and was not wearing a helmet, said Lt. Brian Myers. The teen, a 17-year-old boy, was responsive, Myers said.

The fall was reported about 1:50 p.m. by Cathedral Rock, on the 3000 block of 31st Street. It took crews about 30 minutes to get the teen down from the rock.

Myers didn’t say how serious the injuries were to the climber.

Fire officials tweeted the hiker had been lowered from Cathedral Rock by Heavy Rescue crews about 3:15 p.m.

Colorado Springs fire and El Paso County Search and Rescue are also searching for a missing hiker in the Blodgett Peak Open Space off West Woodmen Road, south of the Air Force Academy.

According to a tweet from fire officials, the hiker was first reported lost about 1:30 p.m. Fire crews and a search and rescue team are at the scene, using GPS and cell phones to triangulate the position of the hiker, believed to be on the peak face in the forest.

Fire officials tweeted that the hiker was still missing about 3:15 p.m., describing the search as a lengthy rescue and said search and rescue teams were in the field.
