At least one person was arrested Monday morning after police found a man with a large cut on his head and armed with a machete in downtown Colorado Springs.

The man was at the 7-Eleven store at 3 North Tejon Street, on the corner with Pikes Peak Avenue, about 1:40 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital and was released soon after, police said.

Further investigation revealed the man had been the victim of an attempted murder but police said the motives for the attack were unclear.

William Elmer, 36, whom police said was linked to the assault, returned to the scene later and was arrested on suspicion of possession of schedule II narcotics with intent to distribute when officers found 21.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to police reports.

The case is being handled as an attempted murder because of the weapon, the injury and the suspect’s intent, said spokeswoman Lt. Catherine Buckley.
