AROUND TOWN: Amblicab rock ‘n’ rolls its first fundraiser
The buses rolled up outside The Pinery at the Hill on May 8 for an evening of music and fun, delivering Amblicab clients who routinely depend on the transportation for trips to the doctor, work, school, Special Olympics and shopping.
Rock ‘n’ Roll with Amblicab brought together staff, partner agencies, clients and sponsors for a cocktail reception/fundraiser, the first in the service’s 42-year history. Amblicab transports those of all ages with disabilities, providing 13,100 rides on its nine buses in 2013, reported board chair Kevin Sullivan.
To a background of rock ‘n’ roll music, Michael Medina and his mother, Nicole, were introduced. Because Michael has transportation provided, his mother is able to go to work as a foreign language teacher while he goes to his job and competes in a variety of Special Olympics sports.
The Amblicab staff includes Gail Nehls, executive director; dispatcher Catherine Tyler; Janet Mork; Ginger Bourg; and drivers Tim Blom, John Penberthy, John Chavez, John Dunaway, Martin Hiltner, Don White, Bill Dyess and Stephen Jay.
