Past meets past at Victor Steampunk Festival

10 a.m. Friday-Sunday, Victor, free-$20; 689-2284, victor colorado.com.

It’s past meets… er, the past. Still, steampunk has captured the imagination of a generation.

“It’s a mix of sci-fi meets the future meets Victorian era. Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells,” said Main Street program coordinator Becky Parham.

The free event features a costume ball, steampunk art and extraordinary contraptions as well as time travelers and miners. This will be the second year that Victor has hosted the festival.

“Last year we kicked it off as a pilot, and it took off with a life of its own. We couldn’t have expected it,” said Parham. “Last year we had 300 people, and I’d say about 80 attend the ball.” The costume ball is a popular event along with broomball, which will be played on Victor’s brand new ice rink. “Broomball is a riot, it’s a grudge match between the Victor Penguins and the Slaughterhouse Derby Girls,” said Parham.

The festival will also be educational, teaching tourists about mining and the history of Victor itself. One of the more interesting events will be the “History of the Skagway Hydroelectric Plant and LaBella Steam Power.” The event will showcase how the town received power in the 1900s.

“Skagway and La Bella are really neat, but Skagway was the first power plant this side of the Mississippi; we were the first place in the Western U.S. to have electricity,” said Parham “The skeletal remains are still intact, so it’s something that was foundationally very important to our community.”

Parham expects the festival to draw around 200 people, but, she said, “it’s always hard to say depending on the weather and how brave folks are. Hopefully a little bit more last year.”
