The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating two fires believed to have been intentionally set Tuesday afternoon at a regional park in Black Forest.

The fires were at the north end of Fox Run Regional Park near Baptist Road and were extinguished by firefighters, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

“The fires are considered separate incidents and are believed to be intentionally set and human caused,” the release states. “The causes of the fires are under investigation and considered acts of arson.”

The 417-acre park is about three miles east of Interstate 25 and just west of the scar from June’s Black Forest fire, which burned 14,280 acres and destroyed 488 homes. The cause of that fire remains under investigation, although the sheriff’s office said it was human caused.

Sheriff Terry Maketa is asking the public to “maintain a heightened sense of awareness while in the area and report any suspicious activity,” the release states.
