Colorado Springs has third highest number of DUI arrests over July 4th enforcement period

Law enforcement agencies across Colorado arrested about 535 motorists for driving drunk over the long Fourth of July weekend.
Police arrested 32 people on suspicion of drunken driving in Colorado Springs, the third highest number of arrests over the six-day enforcement period among Colorado municipalities. Denver was No. 1 with 69 arrests, followed by Aurora with 45.
The Colorado Department of Transportation initially reported that 490 people had been arrested for drunken driving, but CDOT spokeswoman Emily Wilfong said about 40 more arrests were reported to her after she issued a press release.
“Nearly 100 law enforcement agencies across the state participated in the Fourth of July DUI crackdown,” Colonel Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a statement. “And Coloradans can expect even tougher DUI enforcement over Labor Day weekend, with more patrols and checkpoints in place throughout the state.”
Last year, there were 632 DUI arrests during the heightened enforcement period.
Wilfong said the number of arrests fluctuates annually depending on the number of law enforcement agencies that participate in the saturation patrols and checkpoints.
“The numbers can fluctuate really by 100 or more arrests sometimes just due to who is participating and who is not,” she said. “It really depends on that manpower that they have to be able to put towards heightened patrols or checkpoints, etcetera.”
