Drinking and driving is always a risk, not only to yourself but to the innocent people on the road.

The risk will be even greater over the long Fourth of July weekend in Colorado as police across the state crack down on impaired drivers.

Nearly 100 law enforcement agencies and troopers throughout Colorado will be doing sobriety checkpoints or increased patrols or both from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Monday.

In Colorado Springs, the police department plans to increase patrols.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office also has plans for increased patrols for DUI enforcement for the holiday weekend, spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said in an email.

The crackdown is part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Heat Is On campaign, which pairs heightened enforcement with public education, according to a press release.

“Be smart about your decisions this weekend,” Darrell Lingk, director of CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety, said in a statement.

“Planning ahead to designate a sober driver is the easiest way to make sure you keep yourself and others out of harms way. Last year, there were seven alcohol-related fatalities that occurred over the July 4 weekend in Colorado. This year, our goal is none.”

During last year’s heightened enforcement period, 632 Colorado residents were arrested for impaired driving.

“It is zero tolerance for any person driving impaired on our highways,” Colonel Scott Hernandez, Colorado State Patrol chief, said in a statement.“The summer months are typically the most dangerous on our roadways, and together with our partner law enforcement agencies our goal is to put an end to drivers that choose to make the irresponsible and potentially deadly decision to drive while impaired.”
