As I wind down this column for the winter, the snow continues to fall. This is good news for two reasons.

First, the ski conditions remain pretty darn good. Snowfall on Tuesday measured 9 inches at Beaver Creek, 7 inches at Breckenridge and 6 inches at Copper Mountain. This snowfall was convective in nature, meaning it was similar to the randomness of summer storms. Because of the hit-and-miss nature, not all mountains saw these totals, but most areas picked up at least a few inches.

Secondly, it’s good for the water supply. Snowpack typically peaks in our mountains in early to mid-April, but last year we had far below average snowpack and it started to melt by the middle of March.

This year’s snowpack is still below average — about 75-80 percent now — but with continued snow through the middle of April, we shouldn’t see a premature melt.

Two more storms will bring snow this weekend, with both targeting northern Colorado. The first will bring flakes Friday and the second will arrive Saturday night. For next week, a slow-moving storm should provide another round of snow sometime between Monday and Wednesday, with a shot of moisture for the Front Range.
