Colorado Springs firefighters put out a small fire outside Monroe Elementary School, 15 S. Chelton Road, on Friday afternoon.

An investigator is on the scene and looking into the cause of the fire, which was contained to two bushes in front of the school.

Devra Ashby, a District 11 spokeswoman, said the fire didn’t cause any structural damage to the school. But in addition to the fire, windows were broken, she said.

“I’m speculating, but it looks like it’s vandalism,” she said. “It’s not the first time that this happened this year, probably not the last time that it will happen either.”

Smoke from fire got into the school, which is being ventilated before students, who are on spring break, return for classes Monday.

Café Corto was seized by the state Thursday because of delinquent sales tax payments. The owner says he’ll reopen the restaurant next week after meeting with a state Department of Revenue representative. Photo by WAYNE HEILMAN, THE GAZETTE
