Monday’s roundup: Gelb blanks Desert Edge for Air Academy
Highlights from Monday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.
Baseball
Air Academy 7, Desert Edge (Ariz.) 0
At Desert Edge: Senior Brett Gelb threw six shutout innings, throwing just 67 pitches, to lead Air Academy (3-1) to a victory in the Kadets opener of the Coach Bob National Invite in Goodyear, Ariz.
Gelb (2-0) limited Desert Edge (8-7) to two hits while striking out five for his second consecutive strong outing.
“He was in the strike zone, got early strikes,” Air Academy coach Bernie Moncallo said. “He had a good outing.”
Matt Ryan broke the game open with a two-out double in the fifth inning. Jeremy Hochmutch doubled twice, drove in a run and scored once.
Moncallo is hoping Gelb’s outing sets the tone.
“It’s really good; we got three other games left down here,” the coach said. “It shows if you attack the strike zone things are going to happen, no matter where you’re playing.”
Pine Creek 5, Lake Oswego (Ore.) 1
At Phoenix: Josh Prater threw a complete game, limiting Lake Oswego to one run over seven innings, as Pine Creek (3-0) opened the Coach Bob National Invite with a four-run victory over a team from Oregon (4-2) in Arizona.
Prater yielded seven hits and one run, while striking out five to earn the win.
At the plate Brian Skrdlant went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Prater also doubled and scored, and Brandon Hesselberg drove in a run.
Widefield wins by forfeit over Copper Canyon
At Copper Canyon, Ariz.: Widefield (4-2) was tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth when Copper Canyon (7-5-1) forfeited after its coach wouldn’t leave the Goodyear, Ariz., field.
Copper Canyon coach Shea Clark argued with the home plate umpire after Widefield’s leadoff hitter walked in the fifth. The umpire ejected Clark. When the coach refused to leave, the umpire gave Clark 10 seconds to leave the field or see his team forfeit. The coach refused, and the umpire forced Copper Canyon to forfeit.
Isaac Goscha was awarded the victory. He limited the Aztecs to four hits and one run over four innings. Jake Volcic drove in Widefield’s run.
The game officially goes down as a 7-0 win for Widefield.
Deer Valley (Ariz.) 8, Palmer Ridge 4
At Deer Valley: Palmer Ridge (2-1) scored three times in the seventh inning, but by then it was too late, as the Bears fell to Deer Valley (6-12) in the Coach Bob National Invite in Glendale Ariz.
Derek Larson doubled and drove in three runs and Bryce Rone scored twice for Palmer Ridge.
Deer Valley scored in every inning but the second and posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
