Snowcast: Storm should arrive Friday

Springtime in the Rockies can mean great powder days followed by days when skiing, biking or golfing could be the activity of choice.

This week will continue to offer a little bit of everything. Monday was an excellent powder day that was followed by a stretch of sunny and warm days. And now a big storm is on tap.

This weekend’s storm has the potential to drop a lot of snow on areas along and east of the Continental Divide. Not to be forgotten, though, is that the first part of the storm will dump powder on the southern San Juans on Friday and extend north to Monarch on Friday night. I think Saturday could be a powdery morning for Durango, Wolf Creek and perhaps Silverton and Monarch as well.

By midday Saturday, the storm moves into a favorable position in southeastern Colorado and will create a deep upslope flow over the eastern and northern parts of the state. This means that winds will blow from the east from the ground all the way to 30,000 feet. This mass of atmosphere moving from east to west likely will slam into the mountains and could drop a lot of snow along the divide at places such as Loveland, Arapahoe Basin and Winter Park, and also east of the divide at Eldora, the foothills and cities along the Front Range.

Expect the heaviest snow to fall from midday Saturday through Saturday night, and Sunday should be a fun powder day.

Colorado Senate President John Morse, right, speaks with fellow senator Angela Giron, left, at the State Capitol, in Denver, Friday March 8, 2013. Colorado Senate Democrats advanced an expansion of background checks on firearm purchases as part of a package of bills responding to the shootings in Aurora and Connecticut. The proposal would require background checks where they currently don’t exist, such as purchases online and private sales and transfers. The bill got initial approval in the Senate on an unrecorded vote on Friday. (AP Photo/Brennan Linsley) Photo by STF
