Colorado Springs is known for a lot of things. But good driving?

The city has been named one of the 10 best cities in the nation for driving.

The city’s No. 9 ranking was announced Monday — the same day Colorado Springs police responded to a slew of crashes when another snowstorm hit the region.

The ranking comes a month after a national report showed that traffic congestion in Colorado Springs hasn’t gotten worse in the past four years.

NerdWallet, which calls itself a consumer-friendly financial literacy website, analyzed three factors in determing the ranking: traffic delays for commuters, the price of gas and population density.

“We were sort of trying to quantify this road rage factor of the cities that would make you the most frustrated in traffic and the cities where you’d be the least frustrated,” strategy analyst Divya Raghavan said in a phone call from New York, which ranked No. 1 in the 10 worst cities for drivers.

“We thought about what makes people frustrated, and the main components are being stuck in traffic wasting time, paying a lot for gas and driving through a densely packed city where you can’t find any parking (and) there are too many commuters,” she said.

Raghavan, who never has visited Colorado Springs, said many of the cities that were among the worst for drivers shared a characteristic: great public transportation.

“I think that cities invest a lot into their public transportation when the cities are terrible for car drivers,” she said. “So Colorado Springs is not bad enough that the city would really need to put a lot of money into that public transportation infrastructure. In New York, for example, if it didn’t have the subway, no one would get anywhere.”
