Deputies detain burglary suspects

Seven people were detained by El Paso County sheriff’s deputies Monday as officers sought four people they believed were involved in two burglaries earlier in the day.

Deputies surrounded a house at 404 Aztec Drive in Security and two people quickly exited. When others refused to come out, the SWAT team was called in and five more people eventually came out of the house.

Deputies obtained a search warrant and the investigation is continuing. Police spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said arrests had not been made Monday evening, but it’s believed that the four burglary suspects were among those detained.

The vehicle that was suspected to have been used in the burglaries was parked in the driveway during the standoff and was later towed away. Deputies were alerted to the residence when a citizen with a police scanner in his car heard the vehicle description, spotted the SUV and called in a tip.

A home was burglarized in the 4900 block of Sebring Drive at 9:30 a.m., and another home in the 9300 block of Berry Lane at 9:59 a.m. A loaded handgun was stolen from one of the residences.

Widefield High School, Widefield Elementary School and Discovery High School were locked down at 11:40 a.m. because of the investigation. The lockdowns ended at 1:07 p.m.

Neighborhood resident Darla Wooden and her son Cameron, 13, who was supposed to have a doctor’s appointment, said they waited for two hours to get to their house as the area was roped off by deputies.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Wooden said. “Usually this is a real quiet neighborhood, with a lot of older people. I’ve lived here 18 years.”

Of the house that deputies surrounded, Wooden said, “That is a party house. A lot of kids are always partying there, for about two years now, it seems like. A lot of teenage kids are always hanging out there.”
