One shot by police during traffic stop in Woodland Park
One person was wounded by police Tuesday after a shooting during a traffic stop along Highway 24 near the Walmart in Woodland Park, Woodland Park officials said.
The incident shut down the highway Tuesday afternoon, and the eastbound lanes remained closed until 9:30 p.m. Traffic was diverted to a dirt road behind the Walmart, Woodland Park city manager David Buttery said.
Buttery confirmed that multiple shots were fired, but neither of the two police officers at the scene were injured.
The condition of the person shot was not available.
Details of what led to the traffic stop and shooting were not available.
“That’s all part of the investigation,” Buttery said.
The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, along with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the Woodland Park Police are investigating the incident.
The suspect was taken to a hospital.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on obligatory administrative leave. The police department did not say how many officers had been placed on leave.
The last officer-involved shooting in Woodland Park happened in September 2007 when a Woodland Park officer shot and killed a woman at a grocery store during an armed robbery.
According to police, Jennifer Fries, 40, entered the City Market in the Gold Hill Square shopping center near U.S. Highway 24 and Colorado Highway 67.
Police said a pharmacy employee called 911 at 10:19 a.m. and another hit the robbery alarm button shortly afterward. The officers arrived at 10:26 a.m.
