A new Democratic move to ban high-capacity clips for assault rifles is being orchestrated by Denver’s U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, along with New York’s Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.

The bill, introduced Thursday morning, has been dubbed the High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act. The measure would reinstate a prohibition that expired in 2004 on the sale or transfer of weapons clips capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

“Since I came to Congress, I have been working to protect our children and our families from senseless gun violence,” DeGette said in a statement. “Recent tragedies have only heightened the need.”

“While there is no single answer to stopping these massacres, this bill is a step that will go a long way toward making our country safe,” she said.

The bill was introduced less than a month after the school shooting last month in Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which killed 20 children and six adults. The shooter, Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster rifle and carried several 30-round clips.

McCarthy ran earlier version of the bill in 2011 that DeGette co-sponsored, called the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act. The measure garnered 138 co-sponsors, but basically died due to inaction in a House committee. The 2011 bill was also co-sponsored by Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter, of Golden.
