2012 was a great year for Pikes Peak Road Runners; Fall Series winners announced
Locals love the outdoors, and there was abundant proof Saturday night at the Pikes Peak Road Runners annual meeting and Fall Series Awards.
The event at the downtown YMCA was standing room only. The group boasts about 1,700 members.
And the runners, ages 8 to 84, heard some amazing facts in a presentation president Mike Shafai called “By the Numbers”:
39 — the number of runs and races the Pikes Peak Road Runners organized or helped to organize in 2012.
16,600 — the number of timed runners at PPRR races.
7,800 — timing chips used at PPRR races
37 cents — the price of a timing chip (you do the math!)
66,400 — safety pins used to affix bibs
125 — training and social runs
12 — trail cleanups
15,000 — pounds of trash picked up on those trail cleanups
12 — newsletter stuffing “parties”
13,128 — newsletters sent to runners
91,896 — fliers sent out to runners
6 — turkeys
1 — game hen
28,242 — cups of Gatorade and water handed out
12,000 — hours donated by volunteers at PPRR events
7,000 — number of those hours attributed to just 35 volunteers (averaging 200 hours each)
197 — pounds of flour used to mark trails during the Fall Series races
5 — miles of orange streamer used to mark trails
$19,345 — donation to Trails and Open Space Coalition
$2,887 — donation to Colorado Veterans Resource Coalition (up to $10,000 to veterans groups)

$1,000 — donation to El Paso County parks
$1,000 — donation to the YMCA
$450 — donation to Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind
$1,000 — scholarships
In 2012, the running club:
* started a capital reserve fund in hopes of, among other things, constructing a club house
* helped to start a successful half marathon, held on Super Bowl Sunday (the 2012 inaugural race drew 813 runners)
* partnered with Pikes Peak Marathon to purchase a chip timing system used in races across the region
