GUEST COLUMNIST: The common thread? Uncommon talent.
Stargazers Theatre has a reputation for showcasing a wide variety of entertainment and this line up of high quality events is no exception.
Though all of the shows highlighted in this column are very different in genre, they do share a common thread: All of the featured artists are masters at what they do and offer an uncommon and unforgettable night of entertainment.
The Tannahill Weavers8 p.m. Oct. 12Tickets: $20, $25 day of show
The Tannahill Weavers, who named themselves after Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, “the “Weaver Poet,” perform traditional Scottish music and enjoy a much deserved and fiercely devoted following with Celtic music lovers. Performing and touring continually since 1976, this band’s expertise in all things Scottish will have you kicking up your heels and having a “guid time” in no time.
Phil Keaggy7 p.m. Oct.25Tickets: $20, $25 day of show
With more than 50 solo albums and 30 years in the music business, Phil Keaggy has definitely earned the title of “Master Guitarist.” Keaggy is frequently listed in Guitar Player Magazine as one of the world’s Top 3 finger style and fingerpicking guitarists. His signature style includes the use of both electric and acoustic guitars and Keaggy is one of the pioneers of the increasingly popular use of electronic looping.
An amazing fact? Phil Keaggy learned to play guitar after losing one of his fingers in a childhood accident.
R. Carlos Nakai7 p.m. Nov. 1Tickets: $20, $25 day of show
Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai released his first album, “Changes,” in 1983. Since then he has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and has collaborated with many other talented instrumentalists on creating a library of remarkable cross-cultural recordings.
For this performance of hauntingly beautiful and unique music, Nakai will be joined by Will Clipman, a master percussion instrumentalist and harp guitarist William Eaton.
“An Evening with John McEuen: A Career Retrospective”8 p.m. Nov. 3Tickets: $20, $25 day of show
John McEuen, a founding and current member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, enjoyed his July 2012 performance with NGDB at Stargazers and the warm welcome from the audience so much that he decided to come back. He’ll treat us to a personal and up-close career retrospective that will include a solo musical performance, narration and multi-media presentation showcasing his fascinating career that has spanned more than 40 years.
This retrospective will include his career with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as well as his work as a solo artist collaborating with such notables as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, the Doors, Alison Kraus and close friend Steve Martin — just to name a few.
Utilizing the Stargazers big screen, McEuen will share “never before seen” film footage and photos covering such events as the NGDB trip to the USSR (first American Band allowed there) and the inside story of the creation and recording experience of quite possibly the most popular and famous Americana/Blue Grass album ever recorded, “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
