100-loss season looms on slumping Rockies’ doorstep
A 100-loss season.
It’s no longer just some nightmare number on the distant horizon. It’s now perched on the Rockies’ doorstep, thanks to a nine-game losing streak.
With 10 games remaining, the Rockies are 58-94, which means they must go 5-5 to avoid the disgrace of posting the first 100-loss season in franchise history.
Are the players aware of it? Do they care?
“I think it matters,” veteran pitcher Jeff Francis said Sunday after the Rockies fell 10-7 to Arizona. “We don’t like losing one game, and 100 is that number that really, really stinks.”
The Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, an expansion team formed in 1961, are the only franchises never to have had a 100-loss season.
The Rockies have lost 95 games twice, in their inaugural 1993 season and in 2005, when they went all in with their homegrown youth movement. Just two more losses would make this their worst season ever.
