Stargazers’s September will have you seeing stars
Editor’s note: This column invites local organizations to preview upcoming events in their own words.
As the leaves start to turn yellow and gold and the weather starts to turn windy and cold, you can turn to Stargazers Theatre – we are lining up some warm and wonderful entertainment for your enjoyment this fall and winter season!
Stargazers Theatre is a unique and intimate venue located a few minutes east of down town Colorado Springs and consistently offers a wide variety of music and entertainment. From internationally touring Stars to local Rising Stars, Stargazers shows are known for the unforgettable moments experienced by both the performers and audiences.
For September, we chose to spotlight these Stars: world famous Jazz trumpet player Bobby Shew, the internationally famous band Firefall, and the soon-to-be famous singer/songwriter Megan Burtt.
BOBBY SHEW8 p.m. Sept. 14Tickets: $15, $20 day of show
Bobby Shew, an Grammy-nominated jazz trumpet player, has grown into one of the jazz community’s most sought after concert soloists. Shew records many of his own albums and is also an educator, teaching that although technical proficiency is common, it is the emotional qualities of jazz that make a piece memorable. Local jazz favorites Thin Air Jazz will provide the backup music with Colorado Springs own saxophonist-turned-national-touring-artist Tony Exum Jr., opening the show.
FIREFALL8 p.m. Sept. 16Tickets: $20, $25 day of show
Firefall is one of the bands that pioneered the country rock movement in the 1970s. Known for their well-crafted songs and beautiful vocal harmonies, Firefall went on to become one of the most popular and beloved bands in North America, with their first three albums going gold. Band member Jock Bartley was born and raised in Manitou Springs and while watching the devastating wildfires in his home state this past summer, Jock reached for his guitar and his musician friends and put together a way they could help. They recorded an original song, set up a website where fans could purchase and download and are donating all the proceeds to fire relief efforts. (www.anotherfiresburning.com) Firefall will perform this new song for their Stargazers audience, as well as their classic hits.
MEGAN BURTT: A TRIBUTE TO BONNIE RAITT8 p.m. Sept. 28Tickets: $10, $15 day of show
Megan Burtt’s, “Tribute to Bonnie Raitt” must be pretty darned good, seeing as how the red-haired blues icon herself gave Megan a shout out from the stage at a recent Red Rocks Concert. Megan usually performs originals, but feels strongly about performing this tribute, stating: “Artists need to honor the artists that have inspired them. Bonnie Raitt has always inspired me. She has paved the way for women musicians who want to play the blues and has sustained that leading role with integrity”.
