AROUND TOWN: ‘An Enchanted Evening’ at the Johnson home

They promised “An Enchanted Evening,” and it was.

Under a sunny, late-afternoon sky Aug. 18, more than 280 specially invited guests were greeted as they entered the grounds of the stately, 20-room stone-and-wood Broadmoor home of Susan and Ron Johnson.

Once again, the annual “Enchanted Evening” lived up to its reputation as a high point of the summer social scene and one of the top benefits for Discover Goodwill, as it brought in more than $363,000.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were served on the spacious rear patio, and in between greeting and meeting new and old friends, there was time to check out the silent auction tables.

An excellent gourmet seated dinner, catered by Becky Dunlap and the crew from Summit Catering, was served in the large, white reception tent on the front lawn. The meal served as the perfect prelude to one of the most spirited live auctions found anywhere. Suffice to say, when one auction item drew a bid of $45,000 and another pulled $30,000, it was a very good night, and it kept things lively for auctioneer Peter “Pistol Pete” Husak.

The first item on the auction screen was a bottle of 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the last bottle of this premier wine from the private collection of wine connoisseurs Wynne and the late Norm Palermo.

Also on the block was an opportunity to ride the U.S. Olympic Bobsled run in Park City, Utah, a trip to Napa Valley and a week at a Martha’s Vineyard beach house, where neighbors are actor Bill Murray and members of the Kennedy family.

The gold standard was a seven-course gourmet meal for 19 couples at the historic Cooking Club, dating back to Spencer Penrose. That brought the $30,000 bid. Pulling $45,000 was a week-long trip aboard the luxury barge Prosperite, through the heart of French wine country.

Bidders and enthusiastic guests included Ward Berlin and Karla Grazier, Steve and Karen Condon, Gayle Beshears, Phil and Anne DeVries, evening co-chairs Peter and Kate Maiurro, David and Susie Jenkins, Ed and Candy Bauer of Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs and Bill and Kathy Hybl.

Committee members included Danielle Frisbie, Kristin Guggenhime-Wellens, Kristel Hybl, Jill Johnson, Ruben Manuel, Sue Mulvihill, Mari Sinton-Martinez, Elizabeth Spittler, Wendel Torres and Christy Walsh.

Goodwill head Karla Grazier thanked their hosts, the Johnsons, for opening their home and noted that was in addition to Central Bancorp serving as a presenting sponsor, and the family office and wealth management division of Central Bancorp, The Corundum Group, hosted the event’s first after party.
