When it comes to small, gas efficient, economy styles, car buyers are not used to thinking domestically.  However Chevy has introduced a fresh model that gives buyers an American sub-compact that more than holds it’s own against foreign competitors, the new 2012 Chevy Sonic

“2012 is the first year for the Chevy Sonic” said Billy Voyles, Product Specialist with Daniels Long Chevrolet.  Sonic is taking the place of the Chevy Aveo in the lineup. With its low price and outstanding fuel economy; owners will get a lot of bang for their buck.

Available as both a sedan and a five-door hatchback, this sub-compact comes with a chic looking cabin that’s comfortable and efficient. The Sonic provides ample in-cabin room (easily seats five adults) and plenty of storage space as well.  The roomy backseat will even accommodate tall folks comfortably.

The Sonic makes clever use of the space it has in order to deliver suitable function.  An unexpected amount of storage room is plentiful. There are two glovebox storage areas, one provides a USB port as well as a rubber-lined shelf to grip your electronic devices, and the center console area includes crannies for storing miscellaneous items.

Under the hood, the Sonic stacks up well against its rivals.  “The Sonic has the same engine as the Chevy Cruz,” said Voyles, “only 400 pounds lighter.”

A 1.8-liter, inline-four offers a forceful 138 horsepower along with 125 pound-feet of torque. The even more exhilarating turbocharged 1.4-liter matches this horsepower and increases torque to a hearty 148 lb-ft.  Even more thrilling, is the fact that the turbocharged engine gets an estimated 45 mpg on the highway, while the 1.8 offers a very satisfying 41 mpg on the highway.

Handling in the Sonic is responsive and smooth with very little engine noise and nicely weighted steering.  “Both models come with Chevy’s five-year, 100,000 mile power train warranty, and three-year, $36,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty.” said Voyles.

“Chevy is looking to attract a younger generation with the Sonic” noted Voyles “the design of the digital instrument cluster, as well as the headlights and taillights, are inspired by motorcycles.”

Both the sedan and five-door hatchback come in three trims: LS, LT and LTZ.The LS includes 15-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40-split rear seat, and a trip computer.  Of course, both models also offer the standard Chevy six-month trial of OnStar.

The LT model adds an optional six-speaker setup, heated side mirrors and full power accessories in addition to upgraded cloth upholstery.  This package can also include Connectivity Plus which offers cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, an iPod/USB audio interface and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The LT models outfitted with an automatic transmission can also get a remote vehicle starter system.. Sonic’s top-of-the-line LTZ trim provides 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, heated front seats, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a sunroof is available as an option.

No matter which model or trim you choose, all 2012 Sonic models have standard stability control, antilock brakes (front disc, rear drum), side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and side-impact airbags for all passengers.

The Sonic hatchback provides luggage capacity at 19 cubic feet and maximum cargo capacity at 30.9 cubic feet while the sedan’s trunk has room for 14 cubic feet of luggage, which means it’s among the most sizeable in this category.

Voyles also points out that while creating the advertising for the Chevy Sonic “They bungee-jumped it off of a fifty – story stack of shipping containers, took it sky-diving out of a plane, and professional skateboarder, Rob Dyrdek, barrel-rolled it.”  Voyles also recommends checking out the Sonic Stunt Anthem performed with OK GO on Youtube..  Overall the new Chevy Sonic provides excellent power and fuel economy, with an attractive, comfortable cabin, crisp handling, a low price and top safety scores.
