AROUND TOWN: ‘Pasta in the Park’ has Special Forces flavor

It’s a macho dream come true, a chance for six buddies to spend a day with Army Special Forces, and two local men were only too happy to ante up almost $8,000 altogether.

They’ll willingly rise and shine for PT at 6:30 a.m., march, run six miles, learn about weapons, watch tactical scuba diving and a K-9 demonstration, tour the Rigger facility for paratroops and watch their MC6 simulator.

Just call him “Rambo,” teased consultant Rob Regan, who had the top auction bid for the first Special Forces day offered by Lt. Col. Greg Townsend to benefit TESSA and its work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The second day went to Brad Dombaugh of “Pasta in the Park” sponsor PSA Worldwide Corp., and his wife, Leah, was all smiles at the thought of going along.

After the annual pasta cooking competition, the Penrose-St. Francis Health Services’ “Wild Mushroom and Brie Pasta Sauce” emerged as “Tastiest Sauce.” Best overall was Merri and Butch Ziebell’s “Garden of Eat’n II.” The devilish group of Lady Dems was voted best presentation. Their sauce: “The Devil’s Nightmare Pasta Sauce.”

The 20th annual pasta event, on the campus at Myron Stratton Consortium, drew 400 people and raised $115,000, said interim executive director Janet Kerr.

New this year is a cookbook covering pasta sauces from 1993 to this competition.

Keynote speaker Attorney General John Suthers brought the crowd up to date, saying “significant progress has been made” in the treatment of victims and witnesses in domestic violence and sexual assault cases. He was a bit incredulous remembering back to the 1970s, when the district attorney’s office had a “drop charge” day. Women with visible injuries would come in and sign papers to drop charges against their abusers, Suthers said. Meanwhile, “a man would be lurking in the hall outside, watching.” There was no counseling, there was no shelter.

Groups like TESSA have changed all this, Suthers said. “But there is no time for complacency.”
