OTC resident Bowsher finishes 32nd in Olympic pentathlon
LONDON – Dennis Bowsher, a member of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, finished 32nd in Olympic Modern Pentathlon competition.
The Czech Republic’s David Svoboda won the gold with 5,928 points. Bowsher finished 604 points off the lead with 5,324 points. China’s Cao Zhongrong won silver, and Hungary’s Adam Marosi won bronze.
The pentathlon consists of fencing, swimming 200 meters, riding a show jumping horse and running 3 kilometers while shooting a pistol.
“A soldier had to know how to ride a horse, use their gun,” Bowsher said before the competition. “In 1912, General George Patton competed in the Olympics in modern pentathlon, and 100 years later, I’m a soldier in the Army competing … just like General George Patton did.”
Bowsher, a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center, tied for 34th in fencing. In swimming, he enjoyed his best effort, finishing 18th. In riding, he finished 29, and in the final event he finished 30th.
