Mention that Jefferson Starship is coming to town and people tend to start humming “We Built This City.”

Not quite.

The groups and musicians that spun off from the legendary ’60s band Jefferson Airplane, which is a who’s who of music history, took with them their own unique musical styles and music libraries.

Coming to Stargazers Theatre and Events Center on Friday is the Paul Kantner iteration of Jefferson Starship, which brings with it such hits as “White Rabbit” and “Miracles,” along with a number of original pieces, but unfortunately, not “We Built this City.”

There’s another touring group called Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas. Lead singer Thomas is known for “We Built this City,” “Nothing’s Going to Stop Us Now” and “Sara.” None of those will be performed Saturday. Both Kantner and Thomas have teamed in the past with Jefferson Airplane legend and longtime friend Grace Slick.

Group leader and rhythm guitarist Kantner, the 71-year-old co-founder of Jefferson Airplane,  will be in concert here with David Freiberg, vocalist/bass guitar with Quicksilver Messenger Service and early Jefferson Starship; lead singer Cathy Richardson; Slick Aguilar, lead guitar; drummer Donny Baldwin; Chris Smith, keyboards.

Gazette: What’s your most recent history?

Kantner: We continue with all of our usual pursuits. We are traveling through Europe extensively and Israel this fall.

Gazette: Jefferson Airplane dated back to 1965 and Jefferson Starship followed. After all this time do you get tired of being on the road?

Kantner: Not at all. The adventure of music is ongoing.

Gazette: If you ever have time to just kick back and listen to music, or actually go to a concert, which artist or group would be your choice?

Kantner: The Weavers, Pete Seeger’s original band.
