Police kept busy with pair of standoffs

A pair of standoffs that easily could have become violent were resolved Tuesday morning by Colorado Springs police without incident.

The first was reported at 9:09 a.m., when a soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a gun. The soldier, 34-year-old Markus Gerald, lives with his girlfriend and two children at the 4700 block of Dover Drive., and the woman’s mother was the one who called the police.

The mother said her daughter had called her and told her that Gerald had threatened her with a gun.

After police secured the residence and called the Tactical Enforcement Unit, the girlfriend walked out of the home, and left her children with Gerald. Once she was safe, police tried calling Gerald on several phone numbers without success. They tried to contact him through the door, but he didn’t answer.

Eventually, however, Gerald walked out and surrendered of his own volition. He denied that a gun had been involved in the situation, and both he and the woman “denied any domestic relationship or any incident involving a weapon.”

No charges have been filed in the case and police are still investigating.

Police also resolved a showdown at 11:25 a.m. Tuesday with another man who barricaded himself into a residence in the 2700 block of Hangtree Court, just south of Interstate 25 and Fillmore Street.

The woman who lived at the home called police and said her husband, Dustin Romero, had violated a restraining order, and was threatening to hurt her. Romero, who said he had “several edged weapons,” warned that he would also attack police officers if they tried to arrest him.

Romero ignored officers’ attempts to contact him at first, and the Tactical Enforcement Unit was called in. But before they stormed the residence, Romero called his family on a phone that officers had thrown into the house.

After speaking with them, he walked out of the house and surrendered. Romero was taken quietly into custody.
