Rows of tents filled the parking lot outside of the Chick-fil-A at North Carefree Friday evening as dads and sons set up camp for the night.

By the time the festivities started, 28 families had shown up for the second annual Father-Son Campout.

“We just try to provide opportunities for families to spend time together,” said Jackie Walls, marketing director for Chick-fil-A in Colorado Springs. “There were such great reviews from last year. People said please do it again.”

Campers ate dinner before participating in a series of activities directed at elementary-age kids.

Some of the more popular activities included slime-making, playing “capture the cow” (the Chick-fil-A version of capture the flag) and shooting off “geysers” using diet Coke and Mentos.

Kids also received a visit from Station 17 firefighters before indulging in smores.

While many of the families in attendance went to last year’s event, attending was a spur-of-the-moment decision for others.

“My wife and son and I were here for lunch one day, and my son asked me if I would take him to this event,” said John Pope, who brought his 7-year-old son. “He’s been having a good time.

“It’s a blast.”
