A HAZMAT team is on scene at a gas leak at the 2100 block of Southgate Road.

Colorado Springs police and fire are on the scene, responding to a natural gas line being hit behind Famous Footwear on Monday afternoon.

Police say that the fire department has taken over the scene and that crews are in the process of controlling the leak. The fire department and Utilities have clamped the gas line and are working on fixing it permanently.

According to the fire department, the Famous Footwear and Bed, Bath & Beyond stores have been evacuated, but the evacuations should be lifted as soon as HAZMAT teams ensure that the air quality is safe.
