USA Pro Cycling promises ‘big names’ for this year’s race
USA Pro Cycling Challenge fans should know Monday or Tuesday which teams, and which big names, will compete in the second installment of what some are calling America’s Tour de France.
In a Colorado Mountain College presentation Thursday night, race CEO Shawn Hunter said he’s keeping mum on the racers until early in the week — if everything goes as planned — but promised “all the big names.”
Hunter was in Breckenridge for the college’s Peak to Pique series to share his take on putting together one of the largest cycling events in U.S. history, and for a sneak peak at the August event.
At this year’s sophomore installment of the race, the glitches will be fixed, and the coverage — along with the crowds — will be bigger, Hunter said.
There were some setbacks in broadcasting last year, problems that will be fixed in August with the addition of two aircraft. Media coverage is expected to last 3 1/2 hours a day, and be shown in more than 200 countries and territories.
Out of last year’s one million spectators, 23 percent were from out of state. Judging from visits to the race website and inquires to Colorado tourism offices, “I expect that to continue to grow,” Hunter said.
“Last year, it was all about ‘holy cow, how are we going to pull this off and make Colorado proud,’” Hunter said. “Last year was a great moment of truth. This year will be 10 times better.”
