Event gets kids dressed for rodeo
Cowboy hats, blue jeans, boots. Check.Texas-sized belt buckles, lassos, and spurs. Check.And for the girls: lots of pink.The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo’s 64th annual Kiddie Dress Up Review on Saturday was a welcomed as a moment of levity from the past two weeks of the Waldo Canyon Fire.Contestants ages 3-12 years old gathered at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame at 9 a.m. to compete in five categories: novelty girl and boy, working girl and boy, and rodeo arena.Emma Wood, 9, competed in the rodeo arena category with her brother, Colton, and sister, Bella.
“I like this because I get to be funny,” Emma said, donning a flamboyant rodeo clown outfit, complete with makeup and Pippi Longstocking hair. “I want to go to school like this one day.”Her brother and sister took third and second place, and Emma lassoed in first prize.Everyone who competed got a goodie bag. First prize received a custom buckle from Montana Silver Smith, a hat from Loye’s, tickets to the rodeo, a $10 gift certificate to Sonic, and tickets to the Little Britches Rodeo finals in Pueblo. The top three winners in each category also get a ride on Tuesday’s Western Sprit float in the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo parade.Ella Bender, 7, was in the novelty girl category. “I’m very excited,” she said before going in front of the crowd. Her outfit was inspired by the “girl of the west”; white button-down, blue jeans, cowboy hat, and boots.Trigbee Enget, 3, sang a Roy Orbison song and played his guitar in the novelty boy category, and crooned his way to first place. When asked who taught him how to play, he pointed a stranger.“He taught you? How about your mom,” his dad, Aaron, asked. Trigbee then made up his mind and said he taught himself.Hayley Lanosga said she was having a good time in the working girl category. This was her first time to the event. “My best friend wants to own a horse ranch,” she said, “and I really like horses.”Outside, the horses in the pavillion caught the attention of the little ones.Enget wandered near the door.“I want to do that,” he said.—Contact Nathan Vail: 636-0187
