D-49’s Patriot Learning Center adds GED prep program
It’s never too late to learn.
That’s the premise behind an upcoming GED prep program offered at the Patriot Learning Center in Falcon School District 49.
The nine-week course will cover all subjects tested in the GED, with emphasis on whatever areas certain students need based on their skills, said Nicole Paxton, Patriot assistant principal.
“The instructors will tailor the program to each individual,” she said.
A GED certificate, accepted by most colleges and universities in place of a high school diploma, can be used as a stepping-stone for adult learners, boosting pay scales and leading to promotions, Paxton said.
It’s aimed at those 17-years-old and older, but mostly adults, she said, adding that it is an opportunity for parents to be a great example to their kids. A lot of adults who don’t finish high school eventually decide they want to earn their GED, she said.
“We’ll be there to support them every step of the way,” Paxton said.
The first session will start Aug. 16 with classes Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It’s the only one scheduled, but more may be added.
“Accommodating the needs and busy schedules of our adult population is most important,” Paxton said. For now, the district is focusing efforts on the areas to the east, where there are no GED programs.
The $25 fee covers materials, Paxton said.
Patriot is not a designated testing site, Paxton said, adding that the district is working with the Colorado Department of Education on the possibility of offering the GED exam in the future. GED testing sites are available in Colorado Springs, although the number of preparation programs has decreased in recent years.
