WALDO CANYON FIRE: Community to celebrate July 4 together

After the wildfire swept through on Tuesday, several groups brainstormed to plan something major to help and to bring the community together on July 4.

“A Community Rises” will be the result, a free benefit concert at 7 p.m. at the World Arena featuring the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Flying W Wranglers, Michael Martin Murphey and Flash Cadillac. The full program will be announced Monday.

As part of the neighbor-to-neighbor outreach going on throughout the community, the concert will help support victims as well as honor the firefighters and emergency response teams who have been on the front lines.

“This is going to be an amazing program,” said Nathan Willers, Philharmonic communications director. What’s coming together is truly phenomenal. We’ve never seen such a variety of groups coming together.”

Monetary donations will be accepted for the Waldo Canyon Victims’Assistance Fund  and Care and Share Food Bank.

Led by Focus on the Family and the Colorado Springs Independent, the concert will be underwritten to allow 100% of the funds to go directly to the fire relief efforts.

Anchors from local television stations, who worked around the clock covering fire stories, will serve as emcees.

Tickets are required and are available free at the World Arena and Pikes Peak Center box offices, area King Soopers, and all TicketsWest outlets. Online, print-at-home tickets are available on ticketswest.com. Tickets will also be available at the area evacuation shelters and the Disaster Relief Center, 105 N. Spruce St. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The concert will be simulcast on KOAA 5, Rocky Mountain PBS, KXRM Fox 21, KRDO NewsChannel 13, KKTV 11 News,KRCC, 92.9 PEAK FM, Cat Country 95.1 FM, and Classic Rock 98.1 KKFM.

There is a routine $5 parking charge at the World Arena and there will be concessions to purchase.

In a joint statement, John Weiss, Publisher of the Independent and Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family, said, “Fighting this fire, we are one community — together. Yes, we have had our differences, but we are united in reaching out to fire victims in their time of need and also honoring those risking their lives fightingthis devastating tragedy.”
