You don’t need a thermometer to know that Friday has been a scorcher of a day in Colorado Springs, but the numbers might surprise you.

According the the National Weather Service, the temperature hit a record-breaking 97 degrees at 4:16 p.m. Friday, the highest it’s been since 1978 when the last record was set at 95 degrees.

The National Weather Service predicts that it will remain that hot until after 5 or 6 p.m., when the temperature will start dropping off for the night. Don’t put away your fans yet, though. The days aren’t going to get cooler anytime soon. Predictions for the weekend put the highs at 96 and 94 degrees, respectively.

Denver also set a new record Friday, topping out at 102 degrees just before 4 p.m.
