The 35th annual Springs Spree at Memorial Park kicked off Saturday to sunny skies. Marines Danced to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” while coercing passers-by into attempting pull-ups on their bar; colorful custom, classic, and antique cars were on display. Crowds dug into delicious, if fatty, foods and people screamed on amusement rides.

The event that continues Sunday, attracts up to 70,00 people over two days for entertainment, food, and live music, organizers said.

Laced between tents, children with painted faces, holding candy in one hand and guiding their parents with the other, visited the numerous attractions, including carnival rides.

Franceline Velazquez’s three daughters and niece were eagerly looking forward to the rides. One daughter pointed to the amusement rides that dwarfed all the other attractions and said that is what she was came to see.

“And I want to go on those jumpy things,” said another daughter, referring to the inflatable bounce houses.

Meanwhile clouds gathered overhead.

As the clouds crept closer and torrents attacked around 3 p.m., people took shelter under booths and waited for the rain to pass.

The rain may have been a blessing for some vendors, who suddenly had an influx of sopping wet business.

Judi Michaelis, owner of Krazy Lady Designs, uses recycled glass to create jewelry and art. Based in Wichita, Kansas, this was Michaelis’ first time at Colorado Springs as a vendor. “I’ve enjoyed it,” she said. “It lets me open up to a new audience.”

Eeven when the sun was out though, some people grumbled.

“It’s enjoyable,” said Anthony Garcia, 16, “but too expensive.”

The attractions, undeterred by the showers, included headlined by singer Bucky Covington, who placed eighth on the fifth season of American Idol.

The festivities will continue Father’s Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This time the weather, instead of overcast skies, will have a scorching high of 90 degrees.
